Project
Indian Green Service, as a part of a consortium of Ernst and Young and TARU, and supported by World Bank, worked in developing a series of models for villages to implement Solid and Liquid Waste Management as a part of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan Grameen scheme. Seven Panchayats were selected in 3 districts, to be developed as "Model Villages". These villages were to be used as a base for implementation of Swach Bharat Abhiyan in the remaining districts of the state.
Government of Rajasthan
In the past, attaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status had become one of the first building blocks towards total sanitation. Effective waste management applications in rural areas could be used to strengthen, upscale and sustain current sanitation initiatives including ODF but given the complexities involved, it remained a non-starter. In the absence of proper disposal and treatment, the waste is dumped in the open and is untreated in large parts of rural areas. The situation also leads to contamination because of waste disposal around drinking water sources. Rajasthan over the last decade, has made considerable progress in ensuring access to toilets for school and Anganwadis (Integrated Child Development Centres), but Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) has seen little progress. This project addresses the above challenges by building upon the models of SLWM that integrates/promotes ODF sustainability, while creating evidence and learning to influence the policies and practices for improved outcomes of the programs that intend to make India clean. The approach of the initiative is to implement Integrated Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) methods that go beyond managing generated waste to preventing waste generation. Current resource flow uses excessive raw materials and piles of waste causing resource depletion. SLRM is about redesigning this flow so that most of the waste generated can be reused as raw material for further production. This resource flow is more sustainable as it involves the local community, use of environment friendly technologies and efficient business processes.
